KISekae Set system -

WORLD KiSS PROJECT (1991)

Kisekae Set system often abbreviated to KISS - is one of the earliest digital dress-up games and opensource freeware. which influenced programs around the world like Ukagaka, pixel doll bases and dress-up flash games. The first release of the program was for the PC-9800 using a palette of 16 colours. KISS was inspired by retro dolls such as vintage paper dress-up dolls dating back to Origami kimono dolls dating back to 800 AD and Jennya famous Japanese fashion doll line by Takara Tomy from the 80s that was connected with Barbie.

It gained a worldwide audience rapidly in the late 1990s, which is very rapid compared to other customizable Japanese programs. It was also given praise in Wired magazine. However it wasn’t limited to only being able to interact with Shoujo manga style dolls, there were also downloadable sets featuring Tamagotchi, mecha battleships, bugs, food, and video game characters.

KISS even had it’s own free to join online programming school in the 90s with the goal of “teaching everyone to have fun with computers”. The online school’s main policy and the motto was “It’s my dream to teach in a girls-only school”.
